Asta's Grimoire: Where His Swords Come From
In the Clover Kingdom, every 15-year-old receives a grimoire at the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony. The book amplifies the owner's magic and records the spells they learn. Most people get a three-leaf grimoire. A four-leaf one, like Yuno's, is a sign of great luck.
How did Asta get his grimoire?
At his own ceremony, Asta receives nothing. Every other kid in the hall walks away with a grimoire, and he leaves empty-handed. That same night, a thief attacks Yuno to steal his four-leaf grimoire. When Asta charges in to protect his friend, a battered, filthy grimoire with five leaves appears and chooses him. Out of it comes a huge, rusted sword: the Demon-Slayer Sword.
That's the answer to "when does Asta get his grimoire": right at the start of the story, in the first chapter of the manga and the opening episodes of the anime.
Why does Asta have a five-leaf grimoire?
In Black Clover, the fifth leaf on a grimoire means a devil lives inside it. Asta's grimoire is home to the devil Liebe, and that is where his anti-magic comes from. Anti-magic doesn't cast spells. It cancels them. So instead of fire or wind, Asta's grimoire produces swords that can cut, block and erase magic.
Why was Asta chosen by the five-leaf clover?
Fans often ask why the five-leaf grimoire chose Asta. The story's answer is that Asta and the devil inside it share the same nature: both were born without magic, and both refuse to accept the place the world gave them. Demon-Slayer Sword Asta's first sword
The Demon-Slayer Sword is the Asta sword everyone pictures. It is the first blade he pulls from his grimoire, on the night he saves Yuno, and it stays his main weapon for the rest of the series.
What it looks like: A massive greatsword that looks more like a slab of iron than a finished weapon. The blade is wide, chipped and rusty, with a blunt, battered edge. It is almost as tall as Asta.
What it does:
- Cuts through magic. Any spell the blade touches is cancelled.
- Deflects attacks. Asta can bat spells away or send them flying back.
- Breaks magical defenses. Barriers and shields that would stop a normal sword give way to it.
Its weakness: Weight. The Demon-Slayer Sword is so heavy that most mages couldn't lift it. Asta's years of training are what make it usable. It also gives him no way to attack at range, which is why he needed more swords later.

The Demon-Dweller Sword is Asta's second blade, and it covers the gaps the Demon-Slayer leaves. It first appears early in the series, during one of the Black Bulls' first major missions.
What it looks like: Thinner and longer than the Demon-Slayer, closer to a traditional sword. It is lighter, so Asta can swing it faster.
What it does:
- Absorbs magic. The blade can take in a spell and hold its power.
- Sends it back. Asta can release that stored magic as a slash, turning an enemy's attack against them.
- Cuts at range. It lets Asta strike magic from a distance, which the Demon-Slayer can't do.
- Frees the trapped. It can cut spells that are binding or holding someone, without hurting the person.
When Asta uses it: He often fights with both swords at once, using the Demon-Slayer for raw power and the Demon-Dweller for range and precision. Many fans consider the pairing his signature fighting style in the middle of the series.
Demon-Destroyer Sword Asta's third sword
The Demon-Destroyer Sword is Asta's third sword, and it changes what anti-magic can do. Fans search "when does Asta get his 3rd sword" about 200 times a month, which shows how memorable its arrival is.

The Demon-Slasher Katana is Asta's fourth sword, and unlike the first three, it doesn't start out as his. It is the katana of Yami Sukehiro, captain of the Black Bulls. Asta takes it into battle and infuses it with his anti-magic, turning Yami's blade into one of his own weapons.
When does Asta get his 4th sword? In the manga, Asta starts using Yami's katana with anti-magic during the Spade Kingdom arc. Black Clover gave it the official name "Demon-Slasher Katana" in late 2020, and it took center stage in Chapters 316–317 (December 2021), when Asta unlocked his Devil Union form. Anime-only fans meet it in the newer Season 2 episodes.
What it looks like: A single-edged Japanese katana, the same style Yami uses, darkened by anti-magic.
What it does:
- Selective cutting. Asta can choose what the blade cuts. In one fight it passes through a person to cut the devil possessing them, without harming the host.
- Long-range slashes. Its cuts can travel a long distance without losing power.

Not from his grimoire. The four swords above are Asta's core arsenal, and most fans count them as "Asta's 4 swords." Searches for "Asta 5th sword" usually come from two things:
- Devil Union forms. When Asta merges with Liebe (see Asta's demon forms), his swords change shape and power. These look like new weapons, but they are transformed versions of the swords he already has.
- Borrowed blades. In later arcs, Asta fights with swords that aren't his own, including the Imperial Sword.
When Does Asta Get Each Sword?

How Big and Heavy Is Asta's Sword?
Black Clover never gives an official weight for the Demon-Slayer Sword. The story makes it clear that it is extremely heavy, though, because ordinary mages struggle to lift it and Asta trains for years to wield it with one arm. In the art, the blade is roughly as tall as Asta himself.
